AIV recap, Finalists x 10 (03/28)
Whew, finally only an hour. But we had my buddy Stuart over for dinner tonight, so this one may be brief, as I’m getting a late start on the recap.
01 – Lisa, Because Of You (Kelly Clarkson) 15-1
Interesting. Singing a song of a former American Idol contestant. It’s like in the movie Scream 3 where they are making a movie of the events that happened in the first Scream. Very convoluted, to say the least. Stu said she looks like a young Toni Braxton. Anyone remember when Jason Kidd was a rookie and the Dallas Mavericks had the Triple J Ranch, made up of Jason, Jamal Mashburn and Jimmy Jackson? Supposedly Toni Braxton came between Jason and Jimmy and Jason gave the Mavs an ultimatum, him or me. In 96-97, the Mavs got rid of both of them, Jim to the Nets and Jason to the Suns. Randy thought Lisa’s version of the song was okay, but really not that good. Paula said that if she was going to sing such a current song, she should’ve given it a twist. Simon said the song was too big for her voice and parts of it were painful. It’s unfortunate because Lisa is a very good singer, but she hasn’t found any songs that 1) show off her voice or 2) endear you to her. It’s a shame because she is so talented but probably won’t last much longer. She may be gone tomorrow night. She’ll be in the bottom 3 for sure. All of the criticism and stress being in the bottom 3 seems to be getting to her too. I honestly think that if she’s not going to win, she should get voted off sooner rather than later for her well being.
Fun song. Kinda boring though. Kellie wore a cute pink bustier/camisole thingy. She had a little trouble with the low notes (see, my wife is back to help me!). One positive was there was a Kristy Swanson sighting. What happened to Kristy Swanson? I thought she’d make it kinda big after her Buffy the Vampire Slayer role, but never really did. She did The Program and Higher Learning, but then has clearly been in lesser roles in other movies (Dude, Where’s My Car? And Big Daddy). Although the Big Daddy role was hilarious, especially when she dumps Adam Sandler for the old guy. She claims that the guy has a five year plan. Sandler retorts, what is it? Don’t die? Ah, funny stuff. Randy liked Kellie going back to her country roots but didn’t think the song was exciting enough for her voice. Paula said she was way better than that song choice. Simon called it a gimmicky, rodeo, lasso song. She has not been too strong as of late, but I still think that she has a pretty strong fan base. I don’t think Kellie will win, but I do think that her personality will keep her in the competition longer than just her vocals would.
Smoldering. Ace does have that bad habit of emoting some of the lyrics literally, like when he pointed to his scar during that line in the song. And the stare into the camera is beginning to bug me. It’s like he’s trying to peer hard to see one of those 3D pictures. Although I wouldn’t know because I can’t see those things. I’ve tried and tried and tried and I just can’t. Randy said he didn’t sing it very well and that the song lacked a soul vibe (like ‘NSync). Paula asked about the scar and said that one day he’ll have to tell her about it. That comment sparked some snickering by Randy and Simon because they were obviously referring to her alleged affair with Corey Clark from a few years back. Simon said it wasn’t that great of a vocal and seemed quite karaoke. Ace is really falling in my book. Kinda like how Anwar fell off for me last year. Both made a big splash, then ended in a whimper. Did you hear that sound? That was all the people jumping off Ace’s bandwagon…
No suit tonight. And no dancing.
Did you catch that she was “wearing” a beanie in her back pocket, a la Ace? I thought there was something missing tonight. Either the song was too fast or she was too loud for the band or she was pitchy. I didn’t enjoy it one bit. Randy didn’t understand the song choice. Paula called it a new religion and there were 40 million people joining the
In the pre-song interview Ryan clarified that last week Chris’ “I Walk The Line” was actually inspired by the group Live. See this link (http://tv.yahoo.com/news/ap/20060324/114324156000.html). Chris kinda backpedaled and said, yes, it was Live’s version done differently. This really bugged me about Chris. I think it’s because I was impressed at how he changed the song up last week. But I was impressed because he gave no indication that it was “inspired” by another version. Chris knew he was doing Live’s version. I think that he should’ve given them credit in his vignette with Barry or when he was accepting the praise from the judges. To admit it after the fact and after he had been called out on the Internet really chaps my hide. I was just about to become a fan of Chris’ then this happens. Fool me once Chris, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. He looked rather angry during this song. He did wear the tan leather Monday Night Football jacket though. Kristin thinks he has such a narrow range for his songs though and can’t see herself listening to a whole CD of his. Randy liked the song choice, although he pointed out that he was sharp for most of the song. Paula said something, but I tuned her out. Simon called it indulgent and that Creed would not be seen dead on this show. He went on to further contradict himself by saying he can’t keep doing this week after week. This was after praising him last week for being the only contestant to never compromise who he is. I think Chris needs to keep doing the rock thing. If he changes it up, he risks his integrity for not compromising and also he risks a bad performance doing something he may not be comfortable with. I say keep doing what you’re doing, but give credit where credit is due. He will not be in the bottom 3 tomorrow. Guaranteed.
When my wife first saw what she was wearing, she said she looked like a superhero. I almost woke the kids up because I was laughing so hard. Katharine really doesn’t dress that well, but I like her best anyway. Randy said it was a good song choice, but she sang it just like the record. Paula said she was at her best and Christina would feel honored. Simon called her the best tonight (but that wasn’t too hard at this point) and that it was almost as good as Christina. I think Katharine will be safe tomorrow night.
The odds say Bucky’s next to leave. He did dress very country tonight. And he did a little “right leg shimmy while dragging the left leg” move. Is that the country version of the “holding your leg and jumping over it with the other leg” hip hop thing? Randy liked his country better than his last 2 week’s efforts. Paula said he needs to be careful with his diction. Simon agreed because he couldn’t understand a word he said during the song. He said if it was a paid concert, he’d have left. Again, Bucky seems like a nice guy, but he needs to go. It’s guaranteed that he’s in the bottom 2 and should be gone tomorrow night.
She may be a good bet at 12-1. I had a bad Janay Castine flashback from last year when she did Buck Wild by Mary J. Blige. It’s a good thing
First off, I love this song. It’s the theme song to “One Tree Hill,” one of my favorite shows. He totally did a different arrangement, which was refreshing. I still like the original version, but he jazzed it up a bit and it worked for me. For this competition. He still looked like Eminem with his military coat over his hoodie though. And he is probably a worse offender than Ace in acting out his lyrics, especially when it comes to “seeing” something in the song. This one was his hand over his eyes as he was “tired of looking around.” Randy said this boy can sing. Paula loved the arrangement and called him “one funky white boy.” Simon chimed in with great song, terrible arrangement, good vocal, hideous dancing. I didn’t mind the dancing. I don’t think Elliott will win, but he is so needed in this competition. Just kidding, that’s just what Paula says all the time. Elliott should be safe tomorrow night.
