AIV recap, Finalists x 5 (05/02)

So, we’re “treated” to two songs tonight. I guess we’re lucky that both Ace and Kellie are gone at this point. But I still had to suffer through two sets of “thenk ewes.”

I must admit I did not get to watch last week’s version of AI Extra with Kellie Pickler. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing.

The first song for each prospective Idol is to be from their respective birth year. The second will be from a top 10 hit on a current Billboard chart.

01 – Elliott, On Broadway (George Benson) 1978

Very interesting outfit tonight. A tan blazer, with a gold tie (white shirt unbuttoned) and jeans. Looked very Dennis Miller, circa 2000-2002, during his stint as “color commentator” for Monday Night Football. That Dennis Miller era could’ve worked if he just shot from the hip more. He tried bringing stats up to maybe prove to the viewers that he had some football knowledge, but I wanted to hear his ad lib humor. I could’ve cared the less to hear from him that the given team led the NFL in 3rd down efficiency. Miller is a funny, witty guy, but he didn’t showcase that enough on MNF. Back to Elliott. Randy thought it started out rough. Paula agreed with Randy. Simon said it wasn’t his best performance and it was disjointed. I thought it was okay. I think he’ll be on the bubble tomorrow night.

02 – Paris, Kiss (Prince) 1988

Didn’t Tom Jones sing this song too? Paris had a very interesting outfit tonight. A white and black top with blue jeans and pink pumps. She should’ve just worn a purple leather Prince suit. Did any of you hear about the latest Prince legal battle with NBA player Carlos Boozer? Boozer was renting his 10-bedroom, 11-bathroom West Hollywood property to Prince for $70,000 a month. Boozer was suing Prince because he “undertook an extremely tacky makeover” of the mansion, by painting the exterior of the house with purple striping, the “Prince symbol” and the numbers “3121,” which is the name of his new album. I’d say for $70,000 a month you could do whatever you want with the place, short of burning it down. What kind of security deposit is required on a $70,000 a month place? Anyway, I liked Julia Roberts’ version in Pretty Woman better than Paris’. Randy said it was nice and that he liked it. I ignored Paula’s comments and Simon said it was screechy and annoying. Per usual, Paris said “thenk ewe” after every comment. I hope it’s her time next tomorrow.

03 – Chris, Renegade (Styx) 1979

Didn’t really know this song by Styx. Was more familiar with some of their other hits like Babe, Lady, Mr. Roboto, Don’t Let It End and Come Sail Away. Why is it when Chris sings he had the best light and background video stuff? He really rocked this one. Randy said his standard, “we’ve got a hot one tonight.” And Paula called it outstanding. Simon called it a million times better than the first two (performers). I don’t know what it is about Chris. I like the guy, but I don’t want him to win. He’s probably safe tomorrow night. I think that he can even make it to the final 2. But something tells me he won’t win.

04 – Katharine, Against All Odds (Phil Collins) 1984

The USA Today guy (and I apologize if I offended anyone by calling that fish wrap the newspaper for the illiterate. Actually, this won’t be the standard “I didn’t mean to, but I apologize if I offended anyone” apology. Instead I’ll say that those in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks because 1) we don’t even get a paper to our house and 2) even if we did, I’d only read the sports section. I’ve been known to say, if it didn’t happen on SportsCenter, I don’t know if it actually happened) had suggestions for songs for the contestants to sing and he had a few good ones listed for Katharine (Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero, The Eurythmic’s Here Comes The Rain Again, Patty Smyth’s The Warrior, Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time). All of those would’ve been better than what she sang. I was supremely disappointed by her arrangement of the “Take A Look At Me Now” song. I wish she was born a year later because then she could’ve sang his “Separate Lives” duet with Marilyn Martin. I really like this song, but while her vocals were solid, her arrangement fell flat. And I’m a huge McPheever fan. Randy resorted to the “you look amazing” comment and said it got okay at the end. Paula said she looked stunning (she did look pretty classy in her brown UPS dress) but it wasn’t her favorite performance. Simon said the song ran away from her. Although I was disappointed in this song choice, I’m still pulling for her.

05 – Taylor, Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) 1976

How obvious was this song choice? Taylor was wearing a hideous paisley shirt though. I guess it was appropriate for what he was singing, but I still prefer him in blazers or suits. And there was dancing. Lots o’ dancing. Randy called it a wild choice. Paula said he dressed the part and had fun. Authentic Taylor. Simon called it a horrible wedding performance. It was fun. Taylor now remains the only contestant not to be in the bottom 3 or 2. I still think that will hold true tomorrow. The Soul Patrol has many members.

06 – Elliott, Home (Michael Buble)

This was kind of a boring song for me. Elliott looked nice in his black suit and grey shirt, but I was not wowed. Randy called it a nice choice. I didn’t pay attention to Paula and Simon said he wouldn’t want to sing a song that had the lyrics “I want to go home tonight” in it. That kinda sums it up for me too. Elliott is a nice guy and had a good voice, but I don’t see him going past the final four.

07 – Paris, Be Without You (Mary J. Blige)

I know that they can’t suggest song choices to the contestants, but don’t they help them in the wardrobe department? Paris wore a camouflage top (I almost did see her up there because she was blending in) with silver “I Dream of Jeannie” pants. Really odd outfit. When I saw her top I thought she’d be singing “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child. I really hated that song. Randy called the song a big risk, but she rocked it. Paula said it was difficult to catch the Mary J. vibe (but she pulled it off) and Simon thought she did rather well with it. I think Paris will be gone tomorrow night. DialIdol.com (http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp) has Paris off tomorrow, but also has Katharine in the bottom 2. If she’s gone tomorrow, there will be no tears shed here. Nothing but “thenk ewes.”

08 – Chris, I Dare You (Shinedown)

A lot of people suggested this song to the USA Today guy. I don’t know the song, but per usual with Chris, there was screaming involved. My wife marveled that he could yell in tune like that. Randy didn’t like it. Paula said the song wasn’t her favorite. Simon said it wasn’t a good song and that his voice was going. Regardless, Chris will be safe tomorrow night.

09 – Katharine, Black Horse and The Cherry Tree (KT Tunstall)

This was a complete 180 from her first song (and not a 360, which Jason Kidd once mistakenly uttered; it pains me to admit a Cal “student” could be so geometrically challenged). She wore an aqua Pickler top. And no shoes, but her toenails matched her top, so that was cool. She kneeled the whole song, which was a bit odd, but fit the song. This song really fit her persona. She totally made up for her previous song. Hopefully enough to keep her out of the bottom two. Randy said it was more like the Katharine that he’s grown to know. Paula loved her choreography, but then again this is coming from the woman who choreographed the African Anteater Ritual in “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Simon said it showed more personality. I’m hoping that she’s safe tomorrow night, but you never know when America is voting.

10 – Taylor, Something (The Beatles)

This was a sneaky choice that I’d have thought Chris would’ve pulled, not Taylor. The rules stated that you could pick a song from ANY current Billboard chart and Billboard does have a reissues chart and this Beatles song was on it. Did they have to get the okay from Michael Jackson to use it? And I heard that they were going to have Wacko Jacko as a guest judge but he declined once he found out Kevin Covais was off the show (rim shot, please). Taylor did a great job with this song. And he wore a purple shirt and “suited up,” as Barney would say in “How I Met Your Mother.” That show is the best new show on TV. Randy said he chose a great song. Paula called it daring, but he did great. Simon called it clever and amid all his sillyness, we forget that Taylor is a very good singer. He is absolutely safe tomorrow night.

Overall it was a decent night. Based solely on popularity, it probably should be Paris and Elliott in the bottom 2 tomorrow night. DialIdol.com has Katharine and Paris in the bottom 2 with Paris being voted off. I’d be very surprised if Paris wasn’t in the bottom two. I’d also be very surprised if Taylor was in the bottom 2. But stranger things have happened.
